Every day the Mesothelioma Center receives calls asking what to do if you have asbestos in your home.
Asbestos products are not typically present in homes that were constructed after the 1980s. If you think your home contains an asbestos material, contact an asbestos contractor to take a sample of the suspected material. The sample will be sent for testing, which can determine if the material contains asbestos and what type of asbestos may be present.

Transcript: What if My Home Contains Asbestos?
Karen Selby: If your home was built prior to the mid-80s, chances are it probably has asbestos in it. Asbestos was used in pretty much every building material that you could imagine. It was a good insulator, it was a good sound barrier and, quite frankly, it was cheap.
So is it a health concern to your family? Well it probably isn't if your home is well-maintained.
It becomes a concern when the material itself becomes airborne and you and your family breathe it in, so at that point it's important to hire a certified abatement company to come out and analyze the situation.
