Online Cancer Support Is Available - ReadNews
Last month, our legal blogger Karen Marshall wrote a post about Picking Your Support Team. Your support team is made with the people that will provide you with the care, support, and information through your journey of cancer treatment. It is important to have people who are going to fight with you and for you.
Mailet Lopez was in treatment for Type 2B breast cancer when an idea popped into her head. She wanted to be able to connect with people who have already been or are in her shoes. At some points during her treatment she couldn't help the feelings of isolation and confusion. There was a need to connect with people who are going through similar experiences.
Her idea grew into IHadCancer.com. I Had Cancer became a social support network that allows survivors, fighters, and supporters to connect. You have the ability to search for people by diagnosis, age, and location.
The site also has a built-in blog where, if you feel comfortable, you can share your story. There are also features such as messaging, treatment history, discussion board, events (coming soon) and invite people to be part of your circle. All of these features on the site come with privacy. The level of engagement is up to you and your comfort level.
Their latest addition to their website is section titled Dear Cancer. This is a place that gives you a chance to write a message to cancer. You have an opportunity to express your emotions, thoughts and feelings about your experience. Some are angry, cursing cancer. Some have humor. Some taunt cancer with victory cries.
Finding people to advocate for you can really make a difference. Getting advice from first-hand experience can be invaluable. When there are people to stand in your corner, you will feel supported.
I Had Cancer is a place for people to write about their experiences and share them with people who have had similar experience. More importantly, people who may have been recently diagnosed are able to enter the community and be provided with first hand experiences from others.
We want to fight in your corner with you and for you. Meet our team of Patient Advocates:
- Karen Selby
- Missy Edmunds
- Venessa Blanco
- Joe Lahav
